6 Mother’s Day Gifts Ideas for Kids

This year, why not let the kids give mom a personalized gift right from the heart and the craft room.  Kids will have a lot of fun making these Mother’s Day gift ideas using their handprints, footprints, photos, and artwork; and moms will love getting a unique keepsake made especially for them.  Don’t forget to also have them make one for all of their grandmas, a special aunt, or any other important ladies in their life.

How to Make a Helping Hands Oven Mitt

How to Make a Helping Hands Oven Mitt

This is a fast and easy project kids of all ages can do.  Start off by buying an oven mitt. Make sure it doesn’t have designs one it; a simple, plain colored oven mitt works best.  Cover the palms of your child’s hands with fabric paint. You can do it using a large paint brush or foam brush, but this may not work well for younger kids who might squirm because it can tickle! Instead, you might want to try spreading the fabric paint on a paper plate and pressing the child’s hands into it.  Carefully have them place each hand onto the oven mitt, pressing them straight up and down. Let the paint dry and then write “NAME’s Helping Hands” using a permanent marker of fabric paint.

How to Make a Tiny Handprint and Poem

Tiny Handprint and Poem

This is a very touching gift that can be framed and presented to mom. Anyone would love to get this poem complete with a colorful handprint.  Start out by printing out the poem onto cardstock, making sure it is over to one side of the paper. If you prefer, you can print out the poem using this PDF file.  If you have an older child, you might want to encourage them to write it out.  Don’t forget to have your child sign their name and you can also include the date. Paint the palm of one hand and carefully press it onto the page with the poem. Let the paint dry. Trim off about an inch around each side of the paper and then mount it on a contrasting piece of paper and then frame if desired.

Tiny Handprints Poem

Sometimes you get discouraged because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints on furniture and walls.

But everyday I’m growing, I’ll be grown up someday
And all those tiny handprints will surely fade Away.

So here’s a final handprint Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked When I was very small.

How to Make a Footprint Heart Craft

How to Make a Footprint Heart Craft

Start out with a blank, stretched canvas.  The one pictured here was 6-inches wide by 8-inches tall, but you can use one a little smaller or a little larger.  Paint the bottom of your child’s feet, one at a time, and carefully press them at an angle onto the canvas so that the heals overlap and the prints resemble a heart shape.  While you can try to paint the bottom of the feet using a brush, you would probably have better luck spreading the paint onto a paper plate and pressing the foot into the paint. Let the paint dry and then write the child’s name and age, or the date on the canvas, along with any other message you like.

My Kids Walk All Over Me T-Shirt

My Kids Walk All Over Me T-Shirt

You will want to work on the floor with this craft. First, lay down some newspaper, or you can use an old plastic tablecloth or shower curtain liner. Lay your t-shirt down on the newspaper.  Spread fabric paint onto a paper plate. Use a different color paint for each child. Have each child step in the paint and then step on the shirt. They should walk across the shirt, help them to add more paint between steps if necessary. Let the paint dry and then use fabric paint or a fabric marker to write “My Kids Walk All Over Me” on the shirt.

How to Make Photo Flowers

How to Make Photo Flowers

Start out by painting a jar lid (I used the inside of a canning jar lid). Let the paint dry. Trim the photo to fit into the center of the lid. Glue it in place. Download and print out this flower pattern. You may need to adjust the size of the flower depending on the size of your jar lid. Cut out the pattern and then use it to cut a flower shape out of burlap. Glue the jar lid to the center of the flower. You can now add a magnet to the back or even a dowel to look like a stem. How to Turn a Drawing into a Necklace

How to Turn a Drawing into a Necklace

Use shrink plastic to make a charm using a child’s artwork using steps similar to how I made this Baseball Charm Necklace. Start off by scanning the artwork and printing it onto a piece of white ink jet shrink plastic. Keep in mind that the plastic will shrink by about 50% – 60%.  Cut out around the drawing and punch a hole near the top.  Shrink the charm using the directions on the package.  You can find more details about making this project in this craft tutorial.

I hope your kids enjoy making all of these crafts. If you don’t have enough time to make one of the projects shared here, consider making a fast and easy printable Mother’s Day coupon book or bookmark card.
